With more than 35,000 expected visitors over the two weekends, the American German Club of the Palm Beaches brings the tastes of Bavaria to South Florida. Held on ten acres of ground under our pavilion and massive tent, our “Original Oktoberfest” is considered by several media organizations, the second largest Oktoberfest in the country. The YMCA of South Palm Beach County's Diabetes Prevention Program is a community-based lifestyle improvement program for adults with prediabetes. Its purpose is to empower adults with lasting lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their chance of developing type 2 diabetes. FREE 4-Weekend Self Defense Course
During a 4-week period, local women are invited to participate in the “WOMEN IN CHARGE PROGRAM”, A Self Defense course specifically designed for women to be held at the Gracie Barra West Palm Beach Academy. The free program, open to the public, covers techniques and methods to prevent and respond to most common aggressions, and provides an introduction to basic self-defense aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Classes are held at the Gracie Barra West Palm Beach Academy, located downtown at 300 Clematis St. 2nd Floor.

The final meeting of the Self Defense series will be held on Nov.8th at 9:30am. A closing ceremony will be held on the same day, and participants who attended at least four class sessions will receive a certificate of completion and a coupon good for 30 days of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training. Head Start Awareness Month - Community Event
West Palm Beach Head Start Center, 100 Chillingworth Drive, West Palm Beach, FL 33409 / In celebration of Head Start Awareness Month in October, LSF and Head Start are helping to raise awareness and community support for the Head Start program in Palm Beach County. Head Start is a federal program that provides education, child care and health services for low-income families.

Come enjoy a day of fun with the family as LSF and Head Start of Palm Beach County celebrate Head Start Awareness Month and the 50th anniversary of Head Start. The program will honor Mr. Warren Eldridge, Chief Executive Officer of the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County, and Shelley Parker, a member of the Children’s Services Council System Planning and Development team. Both honorees will be presented with an award in recognition of their years of service to Head Start, children and families in Palm Beach County. There will also be a special performance by preschool children of the West Palm Beach Center and a dedication of the Butterfly Garden. Spooky Swamp Halloween Party
Parents looking for a safe, affordable, and exciting way for their families to celebrate Halloween this year need look no further than the Loxahatchee River District’s River Center. The Spooky Swamp Halloween Party will be held on Friday, October 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is open to the whole community. For those in the area who are unfamiliar with this popular annual event, it is a not-so-scary family fun party featuring plenty of games, crafts, and activities for the kids. This year the River Center has planned a Deep Sea theme guaranteed to thrill and amaze both young and old.

This event is free to the public with a suggested donation of just $5.00 per child to help offset the cost of the event. Many lives have been destroyed by substance abuse and the disease of addiction. Too often, this disease is perceived as deserved and shameful, leaving families to grieve in silence, or an addict struggling to recover alone. The NOPE Vigil strives to raise awareness and open the doors to recovery by eliminating the prejudice that follows the disease of addiction. The vigil is held in memory of the 30,000 United States citizens who die from accidental drug poisonings each year. Clematis By Night Families and children are invited to join Prime Time Palm Beach County for the Tenth Annual Lights On Afterschool Palm Beach County on Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Clematis by Night in downtown West Palm Beach. Prime Time is planning fun and engaging hands-on activities, including those in the popular area of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) for children and their families to enjoy.Face painting and visiting with adoptable rescue kittens and puppies will add to the festivities. Children can also color and create their own unique light bulb artwork, and become cast members in a video in recognition of Lights On Afterschool Day 2014, and the important role afterschool programs play in their lives. Families will also enjoy access to valuable information from a variety of community organizations throughout the evening.
